This year Rewind/Fast Forward, the Wolfson Archives’ recently reincarnated film, video and media festival focused on Florida, will be presented as part of MemoryLab at HistoryMiami on Saturday, March 18 and Sunday, March 19, 2017.
On Saturday REW/FF will be devoted to “Memory,” screening films and video that will evoke or implant memories of Florida’s past; on Sunday REW/FF becomes the “Lab,” screening archival moving image materials uncovered by MemoryLab artists while researching their projects.
REWIND/FAST FORWARD FESTIVAL SCHEDULE
SATURDAY, MARCH 18: MEMORY
11:00 AM – Noon
Friendly, welcoming, sunny and bright, the travelogue is the entry-level Florida film, designed to entice snowbirds south for the winter – or any time of year. But in Miami, where the most basic assumptions are liable to be overturned at any moment, the anodyne travel film sometimes wanders off on its own particular journey.
“Twisted Travelogues” presents three such films. Fred Frink’s “Miami, My Love,” (1960s) features a boy-meets-girl storyline that veers toward sexual psychodrama and sequences of scenic sights that approach intellectual montage.
Red, Yellow and Blue, the seaside muses of “Color Me Fun” (about 1970, directed by Joseph Adler), guide viewers through the “one place where colors and people best come together” — Miami Beach.
“Miami Beach: The Great American Resort” (1974) eschews a travel film staple, the stentorian narrator, to revel in the mid-1970s charms of Miami Beach (and other Florida attractions as far afield as Disney World), accompanied only by a a mix of mid-1970s musical moods.
Miami Vice Before Miami Vice
1:00 – 2:00 PM
Before Miami’s dark underbelly of crime and vice got all cool and pastel-colored with Miami Vice, it was just…A big beach town’s dark underbelly of crime and vice. In FYI: “Honky Tonk, Parts I & II,” a two-part investigative report broadcast in 1959, Ralph Renick and WTVJ’s reporters took viewers on a guided tour through the seamy back alleys of America’s sun and fun capitol.
